SERGIO SUAREZ
Artist Sergio Suarez (b. Mexico, 1995) works across a diverse range of media including painting, sculpture, and various forms of print making. Originally inspired by the aesthetic structures of Baroque art and pre-Hispanic (pre-Columbian) ruins, the artist has developed his own kind of celestial iconography. In Suarez images human figures and glowing orbs hurtle through shifting natural landscapes and gravity defying architectures.
The artist often begins a series by carving such a scene into a woodblock. He then stains the surfaces of these monumental tablets with ink and prints the image on canvas. Sometimes Suarez will print the scene as it appears in its entirety – while others, he will sample sections from various woodblocks, compiling elements from different tableaux onto a single canvas. As structures and narratives collide, time seems to collapse and the impression sets in that we may be seeing the same moment from multiple vantage points at once. Presenting reality as the product of infinite intertwining plotlines unfolding simultaneously, the artist evokes the alchemy of our collective experience. Read more
